How the county finder works

When you use your current location, your browser provides latitude and longitude only after you approve location access. County Map Pro sends those coordinates directly from your browser to the U.S. Census Bureau geocoder to identify the county and state.

For an address search, the address is sent directly from your browser to the Census geocoder. County Map Pro does not need to save the location to identify the county.

What is a county FIPS code?

A county FIPS code is a five-digit geographic identifier. The first two digits identify the state or equivalent area, and the final three identify the county or county-equivalent within that state. You can search codes directly with our County FIPS Code Lookup.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my browser ask for location permission?

Browsers require your permission before a website can access device location. If you prefer not to share it, use the address search instead.

Does County Map Pro store my location?

This tool is designed to process the location in your browser and send the lookup request directly to the Census geocoder. The page itself does not submit your coordinates to the County Map Pro WordPress server.

Can an address be near a county boundary?

Yes. County boundaries can run through dense urban areas and rural properties. For legal, tax, voting, property, or emergency-service decisions, confirm the result with the relevant local government or official parcel records.
